Working Together to Safeguard Children
The new edition of Working Together was published in April 2006 and the majority of the changes come into force on October 1st 2006.
Many agencies now have a statutory responsibility to safeguard and promote the welfare of children; Working Together provides details of how that obligation should be carried out.
Work to safeguard children will continue to be promoted through all agencies by the use of various different assessment tools, ie The Common Assessment, The Initial Assessment and the Core Assessment. These processes enable practitioners to identify children in need of support and protection for whom additional services should be provided.
One of the significant changes in Working Together is the abolition of the Child Protection Register.
Individual Children who are believed to be at ongoing risk of significant harm will continue to be discussed through the child protection conference process. Children will have an individual multi agency plan of protection which will be reviewed through the child protection conference process. Enquiries of concern will be directed to the social worker with Key responsibility for the child.
