The Derbyshire Safeguarding Children Board agreed a Strategic Training Plan in June 2007.

The strategy established that the primary focus of the plan is the training and development needs of the children’s workforce in order to:

To provide tiered and differentiated training and development opportunities for practitioners, operational managers and those with strategic responsibility for children and young people.

To recognise and meet the learning and develeopment needs of all people who offer services that safeguard and promote the well-being and children in Derbyshire.

To develop a shared understanding of the tasks, processes, principles, and roles and responsibilities outlined in national guidance and local arrangements for safeguarding children and promoting their welfare

To contribute to the development of more effective integrated services at both strategic and individual case level

To foster improved communication between professionals, including a common understanding of key terms, definitions and thresholds for action

To promote effective working relationships, including an ability to work in multi-disciplinary groups or teams

To encourage sound decision-making, based on information sharing, thorough assessment, critical analysis and professional judgement

To promote an understanding of the lessons from Serious Case Reviews, national and local reports and contemporary research findings. To use these to promote reflection and critical analysis in respect of current individual, agency and inter-agency practice and processes; to identify, appreciate and disseminate examples of good practice; to improve outcomes for service users through promoting ‘learning lessons, improving practice’ strategies and action plans.

In addition to the primary ‘children’s workforce’ focus, above, it is proposed that the we will:

  • Promote, publicise, support or directly facilitate activities, events, courses with/for/by children and young people themselves (working with education, the youth service, Connexions, youth groups and organisations) and involve children and young people in the design, delivery and quality assurance of training and development activities for members of the children’s workforce.

  • Promote, publicise, support or directly facilitate activities, events, courses directly with/for/by parents and carers and involve parents and carers in the design, delivery and quality assurance of training and development activities for members of the children’s workforce.

  • Promote, publicise, support or directly facilitate activities, events, courses with/for/by neighbourhoods and communities.

A key part of the training plan for 2007/08 is the support of ‘safeguarding’ training and development through the District Groups with a training team member linked to each of the proposed District Groups.
